The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating in furnaces indicate what percentage of energy is being converted to heat. The higher the rating, the more efficient the product is. The rating does not include the heat losses of the duct system or piping.
As an example, a 85% AFUE for a gas furnace means it outputs 85 BTUs of heating for every 100 BTUs of Natural Gas input. The 15% balance escapes up the chimney and elsewhere. Most of today’s new models have 96% AFUE or higher.
All-electric furnaces or boilers have no flue loss. The AFUE rating for all-electric units and boilers is between 95% and 100%. However, high costs of electricity may render these units uneconomical. However, by installing a heat pump system, the costs may outweigh the benefits of these systems.
∗ The minimum AFUE ratings for heating systems are dependent on what type of fuel used and the heating type.

| HEATING SYSTEM | FUEL TYPE | MIN. AFUE RATING |
| Furnace | Natural Gas | 80% |
| Furnace | Oil-fired | 83% |
| Furnace | Electric | 78% |
| Hot Water Boiler | Natural Gas | 82% |
| Hot Water Boiler | Oil-fired | 84% |
| Steam Boiler | Natural Gas | 80% |
| Steam Boiler | Oil-fired | 82% |
